Fire Extinguisher Location and Placement Requirements
Where you put a fire extinguisher matters as much as having one. NFPA 10 specifies exact requirements for extinguisher placement, spacing, and mounting height.
Travel Distance Requirements
The fundamental rule: no one should have to travel more than the maximum distance to reach an extinguisher. NFPA 10 Table 6.2.1.1 specifies:
- Class A (Light Hazard): 75 ft maximum travel distance
- Class A (Ordinary Hazard): 75 ft maximum travel distance
- Class A (Extra Hazard): 50 ft maximum travel distance
- Class B: 30-50 ft depending on hazard level and extinguisher size
- Class D: 75 ft maximum travel distance
- Class K: Maximum 30 ft travel distance from cooking equipment
Mounting Height Requirements
NFPA 10 §6.1.3.8 specifies:
- Extinguishers weighing 40 lbs or less: top of extinguisher no more than 5 ft above floor. Bottom at least 4 inches above floor.
- Extinguishers weighing more than 40 lbs: top of extinguisher no more than 3.5 ft above floor. Bottom at least 4 inches above floor.
Visibility and Access
- Extinguishers must be located along normal paths of travel
- Must be near room exits and stairwells
- Must not be obstructed by furniture, equipment, or storage
- In large rooms, additional extinguishers may be needed for coverage
- Cabinets must be marked with signage visible from a distance
